I Tried to Fix the Dishwasher. I Bought a New One Instead.

A dishwasher repair saga, an expensive control board, and the uncomfortable gap between technically repairable and worth repairing.

My Whirlpool dishwasher would fill with water. It could drain. But when it came time to actually wash the dishes, nothing happened.

It just sat there.

We bought this house two years ago, and the dishwasher was brand new when we bought it. This wasn’t an aging appliance we had inherited after years of someone else’s use. It was only about two years old.

That started a whole repair saga involving a replacement wash motor, a multimeter, and eventually the realization that the likely culprit was the main control board. That board would cost somewhere between half and three-quarters of the price of a new dishwasher.

So I bought a new dishwasher.

And I feel terrible about it.

A dishwasher that wouldn’t wash

The failure seemed specific enough to track down. Water could get into the machine, and water could get back out. What wasn’t happening was circulation: the wash motor wasn’t running to move water through the spray arms.

I went through the process of replacing that motor. This was supposed to be the part where I fixed the dishwasher and got on with my life.

It wasn’t.

With the problem still there, I got out the multimeter to see what was happening at the motor when the dishwasher tried to start washing.

Most of the time, the reading stayed at zero. When the control board appeared to try to start the motor, the meter briefly changed—it flashed “OL,” rather than giving me a useful voltage reading—and then went back to zero. It stayed there until the next attempt.

This was a 120-volt motor, but I never got a steady reading showing that it was being supplied with its normal operating voltage.

I also tested the motor independently, and it ran. I checked the wiring and found no apparent problem there.

At that point, the main control board looked like the likely culprit.

That was frustrating, but at least I seemed to have somewhere to go next. Then I looked up the price.

The repair that didn’t make sense

The replacement control board cost roughly half to three-quarters as much as a whole new dishwasher.

Not a whole new dishwasher’s electronics. A whole new dishwasher.

I don’t expect replacement parts to be free. A board has to be manufactured, stocked, and made available for the right model. There are real costs involved.

But standing in front of a broken dishwasher, I wasn’t making a decision about the economics of spare-parts distribution. I was deciding whether to spend that much more money on a machine I had already tried unsuccessfully to repair.

Replacing the board might get it working. But I would be spending that much on a dishwasher that had already developed this problem after only about two years. There was also some remaining uncertainty: the evidence pointed toward the board, but buying one was still another expensive step in the diagnosis.

Its age should have made repair the obvious choice. It was nowhere near old enough for me to feel like we had gotten a reasonable useful life out of it. That made the price of the board even harder to accept.

A new dishwasher meant spending more than the board alone, but not so much more that the comparison was easy to ignore.

And it wasn’t just the money. I could literally pick up the exact same dishwasher model at Lowe’s that same day. If I wanted to try replacing the board, I would have to wait at least a couple of days for it to ship before I could even find out whether that solved the problem.

The whole machine was available locally, immediately. The part that might keep mine working wasn’t.

Going through a professional repair service would add another cost: labor on top of an already expensive part. I didn’t have a labor quote, so I can’t put an exact number on that option. But they would still have to order the part, too. Paying someone to do the repair wouldn’t make the board any more available.

So the comparison wasn’t simply a circuit board versus a dishwasher. It was more money and more waiting for another repair attempt—or the same model, available that day. If I hired someone, the repair side of that calculation would also include their labor.

I had reached the point where replacement made more sense than repair.

I hated that.

I was willing to do the work

What bothers me is that I didn’t start out wanting a new dishwasher.

I wanted the one I had to work.

I was willing to take it apart. I was willing to replace a motor. I was willing to get out a meter and investigate why that motor wasn’t running. This wasn’t a case of seeing a broken appliance and immediately deciding it belonged in the trash.

But willingness only gets you so far.

You can put in the work and still end up looking at a replacement part whose price makes the whole exercise difficult to justify. At that point, keeping the appliance becomes less about whether you can repair it and more about how much you’re prepared to spend to avoid replacing it.

I’m willing to pay something for that. Apparently, I’m not willing to pay anything.

That’s a reasonable boundary to have. It still feels lousy to discover exactly where it is.

Technically repairable

This experience made me think about what we mean when we call something repairable.

The dishwasher could be opened up. The motor could be replaced. A replacement control board was available. In that sense, it was repairable.

But the price of the part changed the practical answer.

Access to parts matters, but so does being able to buy them at a price that makes keeping the machine a sensible option. When a single board costs a substantial fraction of a complete replacement appliance, “you can fix it” starts to come with a pretty significant qualification.

I don’t know why this particular board cost what it did, and I’m not going to pretend one frustrating repair proves some grand theory about the appliance industry.

I do know that, in this case, the pricing pushed me toward replacing an entire machine because of what appeared to be a failure in its control electronics.

That’s hard to feel good about.

Where I stopped

There are things I’ll take from this into the next repair. Verifying that the motor could run and checking its supply and wiring were more useful than replacing a part and hoping that would settle it. I wish I had reached that point earlier.

But I don’t think the lesson is that I shouldn’t have tried.

I also don’t think the lesson should be that, once you start repairing something, you owe it an unlimited budget. The time and money already spent weren’t a reason to keep spending.

So I stopped. I bought a new dishwasher.

I can explain why that was the sensible choice. I can point to the cost of the board, the uncertainty, and the money I had already put into troubleshooting.

What I can’t quite shake is the feeling that a two-year-old dishwasher that could still fill, drain, and run its wash motor should have had a better ending.

I wanted a working dishwasher, not a new one. I ended up buying a new one because I couldn’t justify the price of keeping the old one working.
